A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a formal document your GP prepares after assessing you. It records your history, your current symptoms, your goals, and the treatment agreed with you and it is the gateway to Medicare’s Better Access initiative.
You do not need a diagnosis beforehand, and you do not need a referral to book. Your GP assesses you during the consultation and decides with you whether a plan is the right step.
A plan is not paperwork. It is the clinical reasoning that decides whether you need psychology, a psychiatrist, medication, or simply structured review.
Group therapy items and family/carer items are also available under Better Access where clinically appropriate. Ask during your consultation

Adult ADHD demand is the single biggest pressure on Australian private psychiatry. The bottleneck is rarely diagnosis — it is the hours of history-taking, collateral gathering, comorbidity screening and titration reviews that sit around it.
Our GP program takes that work, within scope. The psychiatrist keeps diagnosis, stimulant authority and the treatment plan. The GP prepares, monitors and reviews.
GP holds
Screening and work-up, cardiovascular and BP monitoring, weight and sleep tracking, comorbid anxiety and depression, mental health plans, psychology referral, continuation scripts under an existing psychiatrist plan.
Psychiatrist holds
Diagnosis, stimulant initiation and dose titration, state authority applications, complex comorbidity, and any change to the treatment plan.

Case conferences, annual review, escalation when function deteriorates. State co-prescribing rules vary; the pathway is configured per jurisdiction.
Two appointments. Structured developmental and symptom history (DIVA-5 / ASRS), collateral or school reports collated, mood, trauma, sleep, substance and thyroid screen, ECG and pathology requests, functional impairment documented. Output: a psychiatrist-ready referral pack.
Booked inside the network with a PsycheTel ADHD psychiatrist. Diagnosis confirmed, treatment initiated, titration plan and monitoring parameters written back to the GP.
Every 3–6 months once stable: efficacy and side effects, BP, pulse, weight, sleep, mood, adherence and diversion risk, continuation script where state rules and the psychiatrist’s plan permit. Escalation back to the psychiatrist same week if anything changes.
A shorter psychiatrist appointment costs less. A review with the GP costs a fraction of a specialist follow-up. And the person who knows your history is available in weeks, not months.

No. You can book a GP mental health consultation directly. Your GP assesses you during the appointment and prepares the plan if it is clinically appropriate.
Most telehealth services issue the plan and stop there. Here the GP sits inside a consultant psychiatrist network, so if your presentation needs specialist input ADHD, bipolar, PTSD, treatment-resistant depression the referral goes to a colleague she works with weekly, and the clinical information travels with it.
No. In Australia, ADHD diagnosis and stimulant initiation sit with a psychiatrist or paediatrician. The GP prepares the assessment work-up, manages comorbidities, and once a psychiatrist has diagnosed and stabilised you provides shared-care reviews and continuation prescriptions where state regulations and the psychiatrist’s plan allow.
Medicare generally allows one GP Mental Health Treatment Plan per patient in a 12-month period, with reviews claimable in between.
